Literacy at Arahoe
At Arahoe, we recognise and respond to each child's needs. We aim to have ALL children leave at Year 6 with strong literacy skills to help them achieve success across the curriculum and in future life.
Explicit Teaching
"I do, we do, you do” structure:
I do - teacher instructs and provides a model.
We do - guided practice supported by the teacher.
You do - the learner practises/applies new content independently – moving towards mastery.
Year 0-2
At Arahoe, we follow a Structured Literacy Approach. Our teaching follows research and evidence based teaching practices under the umbrella of 'The Science of Reading'. A structured literacy approach provides:
explicit, systematic, and sequential teaching of literacy at multiple levels – phonemes, letter–sound relationships, syllable patterns, morphemes, vocabulary, sentence structure, paragraph structure, and text structure
cumulative practice and ongoing review
a high level of student–teacher interaction
the use of carefully chosen examples and non-examples
decodable texts
prompt, corrective feedback.
We have invested in the Little Learners Love Literacy (LLLL) resources and decodable texts and follow their Scope & Sequence.
The Code- Spelling Year 3-6
In Year 3-6 we use 'The Code' to teach spelling. The code is a systematic approach for teaching spelling across the school. We follow a Scope and Sequence to explicitly teach and support student understanding of spelling patterns, rules and morphology.
